Challenger Learning Center of Toledo |
| Our annual business meeting, executive committee election, and speaker program.
The dinner entree is Chicken Piccata: cost of the dinner meeting and program is $21.50 per person. Reservations may be made by calling Bob Toth at 419-249-5199, Ruth Tantardini at 419-249-5129, or by e-mail to djewing@computer.org no later than noon on Thursday, 21 November. Checks should be made payable to Toledo Section - IEEE. Our program this year is a presentation of the Challenger Learning Center of Toledo. The families of the astronauts tragically lost during the Challenger space shuttle mission founded the Challenger Center in 1986. Using a space theme and simulations as a teaching tool, the Challenger Center Program exposes students to teamwork, problem solving, communication and decision-making. By bringing the project to Toledo, the Lucas County Educational Service Center hopes to foster community involvement and long-term support for teaching science and space curriculums. |

IBM’s Linux Watch: The Challenge of Miniaturization
| Just a twenty-first century Dick Tracy wrist radio? Maybe, but this device looks like an ordinary watch, runs Linux, features X11 graphics, and offers Bluetooth wireless connectivity.
Although the watch is still considered a research prototype, it has already run some personal information management applications such as calendars, address books, to-do lists, and e-mail summaries, and has been used to interact wirelessly with other computers running specific applications. Section members requiring a visitor's parking permit contact Don Ewing by e-mail or the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at 419.530.8140 by September 20. |

| 100 Courses are available free to Computer Society Members. Courses covered include Java, Cisco, Project Management, CompTIA, HTML, Windows, Network Security, Unix, and Visual C++ to name a few. Members access the courses using their IEEE Web Account. This presentation will discuss Web server/browser interactions employed by these offerings, show the process for entering the campus, and demonstrate the HTML course. This course was chosen as our example because it lends itself better to a brief presentation than some of the more complex topics available. The HTML course package walks a student through rules of the language and its use in creating Web pages. In addition to introducing rules of the language employing dynamic graphics, audio and video, the package provides a series of lab exercises for use by the student as a learning aid. These materials then provide an excellent reference source for Web site design. Section members requiring a visitor's parking permit contact Don Ewing by e-mail or at 419.893.3562. |
