Tour of Toledo Edison's Bayshore Power Plant |
|
Please mark Tuesday, October 30, 2007 on your calendar for a tour of Toledo Edison's Bayshore Power Plant, located along the shores of Lake Erie in Oregon, Ohio. The tour will begin at 5:30 p.m., and cover not only the "traditional" coal-fired units but also the relatively new unit that is fueled with pet coke, a by-product of the petroleum refining process at the nearby BP facility. One of the four generating units is also in a major maintenance outage, which will give us the rare opportunity to see things that are normally not accessible while the machine is in operation. The tour promises to be very interesting and informative, with plenty of time for questions and discussion.
Please RSVP to Bob Toth, PES Chair, at 419-249-5199 or by e-mail at ratoth@firstenergycorp.com no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 29.

Security Seminar |
|
|
Criminals make headlines every week by hacking web applications. The rapid growth of attacks over the last five years has shown us that traditional reactive security measures like firewalls or intrusion detection systems cannot protect application software. Software developers can no longer rely on the operations team to protect their software. To solve this problem, developers must take an active role in securing their applications, and to secure their applications, they need to learn about software security. Software
security is the study of creating software that functions
correctly even when under attack. Software security doesn't focus
on security features like authentication or cryptography. While
such features are useful tools, most exploitable security
vulnerabilities are software bugs like buffer overflows or
cross-site scripting that can be found throughout the application.
To produce secure software, security needs to be integrated into
the software development lifecycle from requirements through
quality assurance. This presentation will cover common software
vulnerabilities along with the software security techniques, such
as abuse cases and software-assisted code reviews, that are needed
to produce software without such flaws. James
Walden is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Northern
Kentucky University. He is the author of a number of papers on
software security and has given talks and workshops on secure
programming and software security at a variety of conferences. Dr. Walden received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1997.

Technical Presentation: Precision Reference/Navigation Systems |
|
|
The development of Precision Reference/Navigation Systems by the United States has, and does play an often overlooked role in our daily lives. These days almost everyone is familiar with the world-wide Global Positioning System (GPS). GPS enables in-car navigators to know where they are, it enables us to keep track of the distance we've hiked, it allows for the tracking of stolen vehicles, and it is even used for games such as "Geocaching" (if you are not familiar with Geocaching, check out http://www.geocaching.com/). In addition to these familiar examples, GPS also plays a background role in everything from precision farming, power grid synchronization, and even banking transactions. This presentation will provide insight into the often surprising role GPS and other reference systems play in making our daily lives a bit better. |
