| Dr. S. Amjad Hussain was born in Peshawar near the Khyber Pass in northern Pakistan (area shown in map below). After graduating with distinction from Khyber Medical College, he came to the U.S. in 1963 for postgraduate education and training in surgery, which he received at the Medical College of Ohio and Wayne State University in Detroit. After practicing thoracic and cardiovascular surgery for over thirty-three years in Toledo area he retired in 2005 and currently holds an emeritus professorship in surgery in the College of Medicine at the University of Toledo. He visits Pakistan often to teach at his alma matter Khyber Medical College and has endowed a visiting professorship between this institution and his alma matter in Pakistan. He recently visited India as a visiting professor of surgery at the Government Medical College Amritsar. He has served as president of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, president of the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and president of Toledo Surgical Society. He was also President of the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America. He is an explorer, photographer and writer. Since 1987 he has led four expeditions to explore and photograph the entire 2200 miles of Indus River in Tibet and Pakistan. A documentary of his Indus River Expeditions (Indus River: Journey of a Life Time) was shown on PBS stations across the United States in April 2005. He has been writing for The Blade for over twenty-five years and currently writes an opinion column on the op-ed pages of the paper. He is the author of five Urdu and five English books including A Brief History of Peshawar, The Taliban and Beyond and Of Home and Country: Journey of a Native Son. He was a co-author with an ëinfidel cowboyí, a Catholic priest, a protestant minister, a Rabbi and a Buddhist monk in a 2003 book titled: Riding the Fence Lines: Riding the Fences That Define the Margins of Religious Tolerance.
